To Hell With The Bell Breakfast and PQRTA General Meeting

Milner Gardens, Qualicum Beach

The festivities began with a pancake breakfast served by the Shriners in the Milner Gardens, with 92 people in attendance. Following the breakfast, the group gathered for the singing of “To Hell with The Bell” by the PQRTA Executive and the membership was invited to join in for the next round; guests, then, raised their champagne glasses and shouted out the toast “To Hell with The Bell”. After the toast, the first meeting of 2008/09 began.

Minutes of Parksville/Qualicum Retired Teachers’ Association September, 2008 General Meeting

Call to Order: Approximately 10:00 AM.

President, Valerie Dyer, welcomed members, lifetime members and new retirees. Warm appreciation was extended to:

• Milner Gardens for kindly allowing the use of their beautiful gardens
• the Shriners for the delicious breakfast and good humour
• Programme Committee Chairpersons, Kay Howard and Laurel Johannson, for organizing the event and to all those who helped to make it a successful breakfast.
• Judy Devereaux and her Communications Committee for their work in getting us all there (members were asked to advise Judy if they:
• were interested in helping with the phoning committee
• would like their name removed from the phoning committee
• have changed their e-mail address or have gotten e-mail since the last meeting.)

Announcements:

• 50/50 draw: tickets available for purchase
• name tags can be ordered from Liz Holme
• Sunshine Committee: Please let Gerry Galey know if anyone is in need of a get well card, a condolence card, etc.
• School Board Trustees Elections: an informational meeting regarding what being a trustee entails will be held at the Parksville Civic Centre from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on September 22, 2008
• Rick Sullivan: Oceanside Coalition is hosting a conference regarding the privatization of Canada, on October 4 or 5, 2008, in the Parksville Civic Centre from 8:30AM to 4:00 PM; conference is free to all.
• Sandra Veenstra: seeking teachers, who have taught with the Department of National Defense, to help put on a reunion

Membership: Liz Holme.

Liz invited new retirees to stand and be recognized; the membership extended a round of congratulatory applause to them. Liz advised the new retirees and the 2008-09 Executive that group photos would be taken following the meeting.

Door Prize Winner: Ann Davies won a large plant. (Dave Davies invited the membership to contact him if anyone wished to support fund raising for the Davies’s trip to Cambodia to work with street children and victims of land mines.)

Upcoming Events: Kay Howard/Laurel Johannson.

An e-mail has been sent out to the membership outlining the events for the coming year. (Judy will mail out the schedule to members who are not on e-mail.)

50/50 Draw: Nancy Whelan won $42.00.

Adjournment: Approximately 10:30AM.
