The BC Retired Teachers’ Association
Working
With You; Working For You
The BCRTA was formed in 1955 “to guard the interests and promote
the welfare of its members.” As an independent organization of retired
educators, administrators, superintendents and college instructors, it:
maintains an office in Vancouver,
where its members may obtain information, advice and other assistance;
serves as an advocacy organization
which brings the thoughts and feelings of its members to the attention of
provincial and federal governments;
has two members on the BCTF
Pension Committee and the Teachers’ Pension Board of Trustees, protecting
retired teachers’ concerns and interests;
acts as a sharing organization
with active branches in many parts of the province, providing opportunities for
socializing and specialized community involvement;
issues four informative magazines,
the Postscript, per year;
serves as a member of the Canadian
Association of Retired Teachers (ACER-CART) and The Council of Senior Citizen’s
Organizations (COSCO).
As a member of the BCRTA, you have:
input into pension concerns
through a BCRTA representative on the
Teachers’ Pension Plan Advisory Committee;
input into pension decisions
through the Pension Plan Trustees as they deal with the challenges of
maintaining pension indexing and health benefits (one of the ten Pension Plan
trustees is nominated by the BCRTA to represent retired teachers);
an opportunity to participate in
group insurance plans for a variety of coverage;
representation, through the BCRTA,
on the executive of the Canadian Association of Retired Teachers;
affiliation with the Council of
Senior Citizens Organization, which represents about 60,000 BC seniors,
advocating on your behalf.
Becoming a member of the BCRTA/PQRTA allows you to
experience an interesting and pro-active “profession-based” activity, in your
post-work years. The BCRTA/PQRTA membership fee membership is $45.00 per annum
(based on 2007 figures) and is deducted from the September pension payment.
